Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) contains anthocyanosides (which gives it its dark blue colour) which improves significantly the blood circulation in the ocular capillaries. These substances are also applied within the process of the rhodopsin regeneration; and protect the eyes against an excessive sun exposure.
Bilberry berries are also rich in tannin, bioflavanoids, pectins, vitamin A, C and E, mineral salts and myrtilin, which are beneficial to the health. Certain American scientists, impressed by the benefits of bilberry, recommend taking 125 grams daily, which is more than the average 600 grams (2.5 cups) a year consumed by American citizens. “If you want to diminish the damages caused by free radicals which favour the aging process, eat Bilberries ” says Ronald Prior, PhD, biochemist from the Tufts University in Boston, which has discovered its antioxidant proprieties. Of course, you should not limit yourself to fruit and vegetable that are rich in antioxidants, but add these to the fruit and vegetable that we already eat.
It seems that Bilberries help improve the memorisation capacities within ageing people. This is what an experience revealed, done by James Joseph, PhD, researcher of the United States Department of Agriculture, also based at Tufts University. On the other hand, Bilberries contain a lot of tanins, as its cousin the cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos and Vaccinium macrocarpon). Tanins are excellent agents for preventing urinary tract infections, because they prevent the responsible bacteria for this disease from attaching itself to the walls of the bladder. Bilberry is recommended in case of cystitis and colibacilloses. It is efficient against diarrhoea and intestinal spasms.
Finally, according to European research studies, Bilberry improves also the night vision and the adjustment to intense light. Following these researches, bilberries have reached in Japan a reputation for their capacity to fight ocular fatigue and are qualified as the “vision fruit”.
