Pomegranate has been used since a long time in different forms of traditional medicine to treat pains like colic and diarrhea. Still today, the scientific community demonstrates a big interest towards this fruit; particularly due to its high level of antioxidant components. Therefore, several researchers looked into the health effects of the consummation of Pomegranate and of the juice extracted from the fruit. This is file is regarding the proprieties of the comestible parts of the Pomegranate , meaning the seeds and its juice.

Most important pomegranate nutrients:

Copper
Pomegranate is a copper source. As a component of several enzymes; copper is necessary to the formation of hemoglobin and collagen in the body (protein, used for the structure and repairing of the tissues). Several enzymes, containing copper, contribute also to defend the body against free radicals.

Pantothenic acid
Pomegranate is a source of pantothenic acid. Also called Vitamin B5, the pantothenic acid is part of the key coenzyme allowing the body to use adequately the energy issued from ingested food. It participates to several steps of the fabrication of steroid hormones, neurotransmetters (the messengers within the nervous flow) and hemoglobin.

Vitamin B6
Pomegranate is a Vitamin B6 source. Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is part of the coenzymes participating to the metabolism of proteins and fatty acids, and the fabrication of neurotransmitters. It collaborates also with the fabrication of red blood cells and allows them to transport more oxygen. Pyridoxine is also necessary to the transformation of glycogen into glucoses, and contributes to the good function of the immune system. Finally, this vitamin plays a role in the formation of certain components of the nervous cells.

Vitamin C
Pomegranate is a Vitamin C source. The vitamin C role in the body has more than just antioxidant proprieties. It contributes to the health of the bones, cartilage, teeth and gums. On top of that, it protects from infections, helps the absorption of iron contained in vegetables, and accelerates the healing process.

Cardio-vascular Diseases
Within many studies, regular consumption of Pomegranate has been proven to be benefic for preventing certain risks of cardio-vascular diseases. Among other things, a clinical study has demonstrated a diminution of atherosclerosis damage with patients consuming daily 50 ml (1/4 cup) of Pomegranate juice during a year, compared to the group taking a placebo*. In the same way, daily consummation of 240 ml (about 1 cup) of Pomegranate juice during 3 months by patients suffering from a coronary disease, has improved the blood stream in the arteries, compared to the placebo consuming group**. Diabetic patients with a high level of lipids in the blood consuming daily 40 g of Pomegranate during 8 weeks, has caused a diminution of the total cholesterol and the bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood***. This benefic effect could only be observed on patient with a high cholesterol level. The antioxidant activity of the Pomegranates flavonoids could also protect the lipids in the blood (for example cholesterol) against oxidation. Furthermore, this protection is way superior when it is conferred by the Pomegranate juice antioxidants, compared to highly rich in phenolic components drinks like Cornflower or Grape juice, or red wine.
